Step 2: Upload Your Files

After confirming your order, upload your print-ready files (we accept PDFs). We’ll check your files to ensure everything meets our guidelines for digital printing.

Step 3: Review Your Proof

Before printing, we will supply you with a digital copy of your hardcover and a sample PDF of the text. Check these thoroughly to make sure the cover fits on the boards as you intended.

Step 4: Printing Begins

Once you've approved the files we start by printing the covers and producing the hardcover cases. At the same time we print the text and start sewing the printed sheets into bookblocks.

Step 5: Binding

When all the material is printed, sewn and the hardcovers are made, we then use our EMP binding line to case the books. This is where the bookblocks are fixed to the board covers. A final quality check is completed before dispatch.

Step 6: Dispatch and Delivery

Your books are packaged into single-skin cardboard boxes with lots of bubble wrap before being placed in larger double-skinned boxes.  We dispatch via DPD, Parcelforce or Pallet courier, arriving safely and promptly at your door. Express delivery options are available for urgent projects.

We prefer press-ready PDF files for optimal print quality, however, we can convert your Microsoft Word files to PDF at no additional cost.

Bleed: Include at least 3mm bleed on all edges.
Resolution (DPI): Ensure all images are 300 DPI for optimal clarity.
Colour Mode: All files must be supplied in CMYK colour mode.
Size Accuracy: PDF file dimensions should precisely match your requested book size (e.g., A5, A4, Novel).

Why choose thread-sewn binding?

Thread-sewn binding is a premium method, typically an optional upgrade at most printers but at Imprint Digital, we offer it as standard on every hardback book we print.

Benefits of thread-sewn binding

Thread-sewn books are exceptionally durable, easy to open, and naturally lay flat on any surface. This provides readers with a better reading experience, and enhanced longevity compared to standard glued bindings.

Thread-sewn vs glued hardbacks

Unlike glued hardbacks (EVA or PUR) that can be stiff, hard to open, and may require breaking the spine to lay flat, thread-sewn books open effortlessly. This gives them a superior look, feel, and functionality, ensuring your hardbacks deliver a premium reading experience.

Book Sizes

Our hardback books range from A6 to 310mm Square, including A4 landscape and everything in- between. The most popular hardback size is Royal (234x156mm) or A4 portrait (210x297mm).

Paper Types

We have various paper types available, from bookwove papers from 70gsm to 120gsm to coated papers from 115gsm to 200gsm and everything in-between. We have a number of different paper suppliers, please contact us if you require anything special.

Thread Sewn Binding

Thread-sewn binding is a standard option for all our hardback books. This is the only option we provide which sets us apart from other book printers. Thread-sewn binding is the best form of binding you can have for your hardback book.

Cover Options and Laminations

We have two main cover options for hardback books - Printed Paper Case (PPC) and Wibalin Cloth. PPC covers are printed on a 150gsm coated paper and then laminated in either, gloss, matt or soft touch. Our Wibalin covers have a cloth material applied to the case and then wrapped in a dustjacket. We can also use faux leather for a traditional hardcover book.

Foil, Embossing and Spot UV

We offer various cover finishes for all hardback books, from foil blocking in gold or silver with extra colours available, embossing and debossing, and spot UV. These finishes can be applied to the main board covers and the dustjacket. Spot UV is only available on PPC covers and Dustjackets.

Inserts, Fold-Outs, Endpapers and more

Because our hardback books are created in-house, we have complete control over special features. You can have fold-outs, such as maps or family history hierarchies, special inserts on coated paper, printed endpapers, wallets attached to the inside cover and many more.

Ribbon Markers and Headbands

All our hardback books can be customised with optional ribbon markers and decorative head and tail bands, perfect for journals, diaries, and photobooks. These come in various different colours from Winter & Company.

I wanted to turn my husband’s holiday journal into a ‘proper’ book for his birthday but didn’t have a clue on where to start. This was my first venture into self-publishing. I was a little apprehensive, especially when it came to accurate colour reproduction. However, I needn't have worried. The samples book which Imprint Digital initially supplied gave me confidence. An excellent intoduction to the whole printing process and let me see the quality and feel of the different papers available for different purposes. As a complete novice to self-publishing, I had no idea how to go about the publication of my collection of short stories. In searching for printers who might take on a short print run, I was impressed by the presentation and positive attitude of Imprint Digital. When I contacted them they explained the processes involved; I had not realised that my first step was toward a typesetter rather than a printer. Since Imprint work well with selected typesetters I was able to get the whole project completed in one place with no misunderstandings. In addition both typesetter and printer were helpful and sympathetic, explaining what could and could not be achieved – essential for a beginner whose editor had higher standards than most. It goes without saying (but I insist on saying it anyway) that Imprint do a fine job in producing a very professional-looking result, with both efficiency and kindness, and I could not recommend their services more highly.

I'd never heard of Imprint Digital but when it came to looking for a printer to produce my book on the 1974 Flixborough disaster I resorted to Google, Imprint Digital were highlighted and I enquired further with them.It wasn't a small order, 500 hardback books of nearly 400 pages (63,000 words) in A4 with 200 colour and black and white photographs/maps and diagrams.I'd never written a book before so asked for advice and suggestions, Evie was the pre-production assistant who took me by the hand and guided me through the entire process !Nothing was too much trouble for her and her replies to my constant emails were almost instant and always within a few hours at worst. She added the title to the spine, helped direct me for an ISBN number, pointed out any little layout issues and many other things.I was sent a very clever 'guide to paper type, layout, font sizes and 'french flaps' to name a few, this guide was free of charge and helped me decide how to go about things and also that Imprint Digital were the people to go to!I had 3 different proof copies sent to me, all were received within a week of me sending yet another revised file and all at no extra cost!The quality is excellent and no payment was required until the order was sent to print.When it came to printing and despatch, I suggested a date and the pallet arrived at my home address by 10 am the morning after it had left their unit in Exeter some 280 miles away.I cannot speak highly enough of Imprint Digital and would recomend others use them. I will certainly be using them again for any subsequent printing jobs.I wish I could give them 10 stars !!!!

Writing a memoir for my ailing brother was enough of a challenge for a small group of friends and family. Getting it printed though could not have been easier with Imprint Digital, especially the hugely supportive Evie. Recently completed my father's memoirs with Imprint Digital and couldn't recommend them highly enough. We worked with Evie, who was a pleasure to deal with, and made the whole process very straight forward. They sent out a physical proof of the book which allowed us to make final tweaks and gave us great peace mind about the final product. The book production has a real wow factor and has been much commented on. It looks as good if not better than most professional autobiographies I have read. It's a minefield for the uninitiated to select a company to print your book, but I would not hesitate to recommend them or work with them again in the future.

We came to Imprint Digital after much searching on the web and having previously had a proof made by one of the big online, self-publishing companies. A hardback, or hardcover book features boards wrapped in a printed paper case or cloth-like material. We use 2750-micron boards for a superior feel and durability, and use Wibalin Buckram for our cloth.

Yes, this is called a printed proof copy. We produce proof copies either digital or printed for all hardback orders.

Hardback books take more time to produce than paperback books, so the lead times are slightly longer. Our standard turnaround time for hardback books is 3 weeks. However, if you need your books earlier for a book launch, we can produce them within 2 weeks. We don't charge extra for urgent deliveries, but please contact us before ordering if you need them within 2 weeks.

We can print and bind any size from A6 (148x105mm) to A4 (297x210mm). Larger sizes, such as 310 x 310mm, are also possible - contact us for a custom quote. Our flexible capabilities ensure we can accommodate a wide range of book formats.

We provide a variety of paper options to suit diverse content needs:

  • 70gsm–120gsm Bookwove (White or Cream): Ideal for text-heavy publications.
  • 100gsm Opaque: Excellent for journals and notebooks that require easy note-taking.
  • 130gsm/170gsm Coated (Matt or Gloss): Perfect for image-rich content, such as photobooks.

We exclusively use thread-sewn binding as standard for hardbacks. This choice ensures a more durable, high-quality product than lower-cost paperback-style bindings.

Thread-sewn binding, also known as smyth-sewn binding, involves sewing sections of pages together with thread. This method produces a durable book block that opens flat, offering readers improved ease of use and longevity compared to glued bindings.

We offer two primary cover styles:

  • Printed Paper Case (PPC): Laminated printed paper (150gsm) wrapped around the boards (2750micron), ideal for fully custom designs.
  • Dustjacket Editions: A cloth-like Wibalin Buckram material, available in various colours, that can be enhanced with foil blocking or printed elements. This option provides a traditional, sophisticated look.

To further enhance the appearance and functionality of your hardback we offer:

  • Foiling: Add metallic or coloured foil details to highlight titles or design elements.
  • Embossing: Incorporate raised or debossed elements for a tactile, premium finish.
  • Shrink Wrapping: Protect each copy during distribution and retail display.
